Scheduling a first psychiatric appointment can feel uncertain. You may wonder what you will be asked, what you need to bring, or whether medication will be recommended.
At Creekdale Psychiatry, your first visit is a calm, private conversation. We will listen carefully, answer your questions, and work with you to understand what support may fit your needs.
Before your appointment
You will receive intake forms in advance. Please complete them before your visit so we can use your appointment time well. Our intake is very thorough, and in most cases, all the information we need should already be included there. You do not need to bring anything physical unless you want to.
If it feels helpful, you are welcome to have a current list of medications and supplements, any prior psychiatric or medical records you would like us to review, or a short note about your main concerns and when they began. These are optional, not required.
You do not need to remember every detail perfectly. It is okay to say that you are unsure or need help explaining something.
If you choose telehealth, please plan to join from a private space with a reliable internet connection. We provide telehealth appointments for adults anywhere in Texas. In-office appointments are available at our Longview location.
During the first visit
The initial psychiatric evaluation usually takes about 60 minutes. It is a conversation, not a test. There are no right or wrong answers.
We will ask about what brings you in and how you have been feeling. We may discuss:
- Your symptoms and how long they have lasted
- Sleep, energy, concentration, work, and relationships
- Your medical and medication history
- Previous treatment and what was helpful or difficult
- Any concerns you have about your mental health
You will have time to ask questions, too. Please share concerns about side effects, past treatment experiences, or anything else that matters to you. We want you to feel informed and included in your care.

Discussing your care plan
At the end of the evaluation, we will discuss what may be contributing to how you are feeling. We will explain possible options in clear language and create a plan with you.
Medication may or may not be part of that plan. Nothing is prescribed automatically, and we do not promise a specific medication. If medication is recommended, we will talk about why, possible benefits, side effects, and what to expect.
A diagnosis is a tool to guide care. It is not a judgment or a permanent label. Our goal is to help you understand your options and take the next step with greater confidence.
If medication is part of your plan, follow-up medication management visits allow us to see how things are working. We can discuss progress, concerns, and adjustments as needed.
